“Modern Queen Anne” Three bedroom, Second floor laundry, 1 ½ baths, first floor family room, formal dining room, fabulous eat-in kitchen. Basement to roof remodeling since 1996.This is the best buy we have seen, the next move is yours. This one is an eye stopper and will also stop your heart.$129,000.00 Call Terry at 759-1215 for more information and/or to see. MLS # 112042 The original entry in the abstract shows the sale of all four lots along 6th street between Cedar and Locust by the U.S. government to Bernhard Henn, Feb. 9th 1841, for $6.40.February 27, 1986 Henry and Mollie Braun purchased the lot for $800.00 and in 1898 build their home. The building is a mid period Queen Ann style, probably constructed from plans available at the time. Henry Braun was a carpenter employed by Nairn and Gilles, a local lumber supplier. He was undoubtedly responsible for the main staircase millwork. In 1926 Henry Braun, then a widower, died and left the property to his four children. The next 46 years saw 10 additional owners. In 1971 the property was converted to a duplex. The spire was removed, exterior porches were enclosed and general interior damage began. The building suffered abuse and neglect until 1994 when the city ordered if vacated. In 1996 the property was purchased by its current owners, Wisconsin Architect, Anthony Griffin, and his wife, Suzanne. They set out to rebuild the structure and return it to a single family residence. The exterior was researched and rebuilt according to best available details and clues. The spire was rebuilt, porches were opened up and fish scale shingling was restored. The interior saw a completely new plumbing, electrical and heating system. The entire central portion of the house was jacked up and new structural steel columns and beams replaced rotted wood members. The original room pattern, traffic flow, woodwork and detailing were maintained. Only the mechanics and furnishing reflect the 90’s.All interior natural woodwork, window casement, flooring and millwork were repaired or restored, cleaned and sealed. Note the unique design of the main staircase – undoubtedly built by Henry Braun. The living room fireplace, only on in the home, is currently not in use however yet may be fitted with a gas burner. The firebrick was removed and rebuilt. Mirrored glass above the mantle and fine carpentry surrounding the fireplace are original. All of the exterior double-hung windows were replaced with thermal pane replacement sashes. Missing moldings were reproduced by Suzanne’s father, a master carpenter, to match existing details. The oak flooring in the foyer, which was refinished, is typical of the flooring throughout the first floor. The turret at the southeast corner of the home was jacked and rebuilt. This major repair to the structure included the reconstruction of the spire and replacement of the exterior fish scale siding. The east bedroom with the small adjoining nursery functions as “his and hers” office space. The floor boards in the north bedroom were stripped and have a natural finish. The owner furnished this room in a period style. Note the unusual closet in the southwest corner of the room. It is believed this was included to complete the symmetry of the floor plan. The upstairs bathroom was relocated and combined with an upstairs laundry room and access way to the attic. These two small rooms at the back of the house were thought to be the original maid’s quarters. The rear staircase to the kitchen is original. The kitchen was designed by the owners with all new, cabinetry, flooring, lighting and appliances. An original window in the northwest corner of the room was replaced with an exterior door which leads to an extensive deck. A half-bath off the kitchen (believed to be a butler’s pantry) was added. Note an original light fixture above the sink.
